In this section, I compile my six favorite movies for a given topic.
- Top Jake Gyllenhaal Movies – Since I most recently reviewed the movie Life, a movie starring Jake Gyllenhaal, my first six pack will be my six favorite Gyllenhaal performances.
- Top Movies Set in Boston – I think Boston might be my single favorite locale for movies. Four of my Top 35 favorite movies of all-time set place in Boston, with a fifth (Shutter Island) not far away.
- Top Movies That Did Not Receive a Single Oscar Nomination – we talk often at awards season about movies that have been snubbed in a certain Academy Awards category. But what happens when an excellent movie receives no Oscar considerations at all?
I’ve soured quite a bit on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While the films are well made more often than not, the cookie-cutter formula used to define each origin story has lost its luster. I’ve gotten lost with the number of sequels with each franchise and what order all of these films should be watched in. Nevertheless, near its infancy, I very much looked forward to these films.
- Iron Man (2008) – If this movie failed, the MCU might have failed. All of the successes and the combined 30 +billion US dollars that films have grossed (through May 2023) are a direct result of director Jon Favreau’s vision and the perfect casting of Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man. Iron Man earned $318M domestically, resonated with both critics (94%) and audiences (91%) , and catalyzed (as of May 2023) 31 more movies and counting.
- Iron Man 2 (2010) –
- Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) –
- Iron Man 3 (2013)
- Captain America: Civil War (2016) –
- Avengers: Infinity War (2018) –
