The Dark Knight (2008)

the dark knight movie posterMany deem Christopher Nolan’s (InterstellarOppenheimerThe Dark Knight the best comic book movie ever. Those and others consider Nolan’s three Batman films the quintessential superhero trilogy. The Dark Knight is the franchise’s standout, successfully eclipsing the superhero genre and delivering an eerie tale of good versus evil that requires many chief characters to make layered, moral decisions at a moment’s notice. In particular, The Joker (Heath Ledger – Brokeback Mountain, Monster’s Ball), the film’s villain, continually requires its protagonists to choose between what is best for them and society’s greater good. Fans of superhero movies and those who traditionally have little to no interest in that genre can equally appreciate The Dark Knight.

A Good Person (2023)

a good person movie posterMore often than not, I enjoy movies, television shows, books, and music dealing with addiction. When a show, a song, an autobiography, etc., effectively chronicles the compulsive and desperate realities of substance abuse, I will give it my undivided attention. When a character adeptly captures the euphoria of being drunk, high, or stoned, followed by the bleak and inpatient hopelessness that awaits when that high wears off, I am reminded of how prevalent, powerful, and relentless addiction is. Two critically limited series (Dopesick – 2022 and Painkiller – 2023) brought pharmaceutical pill addiction to the forefront in ways that film or television hadn’t before. The ability to tell an addiction story over 8-10 one-hour-long episodes allows a director more opportunity to delve into the depths of the disease while allowing for deep character examinations. That is not to say that a film that centers around addiction can’t be captivating. Numerous examples have shown this. Unfortunately, Zach Braff’s (Garden State, Wish I Was Here) well-intentioned A Good Person was not one of them.

Gone Baby Gone (2007)

Ben Affleck’s (ArgoThe TownGone Baby Gone is a classic film if you watch it once. But then comes the age-old question, “Does a movie stand the test of time?” And the answer to the question for this film is “I think so.” By this, I’m referring to the fact that if you watched it today for the first time, you would likely feel the same sentiments I felt on my first watch. You would think that it is an instant gem. But there are better movies for repeat viewings. Some films are great the second, third, and fourth time around. Gone Baby Gone is not one of those films. It’s a bit frustrating on repeat viewings. But I will ignore my most recent viewing of this film and write it from the standpoint that I had just seen it for the first time because that is the review it deserves.

The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

Remember, hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.

Wrongly accused of murdering his wife and her lover, Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins – Jacobs Ladder, Mystic River), a young, successful vice president of a major bank, is sentenced to serve back-to-back life sentences in Shawshank State Penitentiary never gets too down in his circumstances, even though he will spend out his days behind bars. In contrast, his wife’s killer roams the streets free. The legendary fiction horror writer Steven King (The Shining, The Mist) introduced himself to a new kind of audience with this quiet and underrated (at its release) The Shawshank Redemption, a film that is nothing like Pet Semetary, IT, Cujo, Misery, Needful Things, Christine, Thinner, Carrie, Firestarter, Children of the Corn or a host of his other adapted horror novels adapted for film. The Shawshank Redemption is the complete opposite of a horror film. It is the crowning achievement of director Frank Darabont’s (The Green MileThe Mist) career. This movie has been the highest-rated movie on the International Movie Database (IMDB) in the history of its website.

Transcendence (2014)

After months of hype, Wally Pfister’s directorial debut, Transcendence, was by its 19% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. I remember looking forward to this movie when I first heard about it. However, my hopes quickly extinguished when I saw how poorly the critics received it and how poorly it did at the box office. It grossed only $23 million domestically (although it did end up grossing $103 million worldwide, surpassing its $100 million budget barely and making it a slightly profitable movie). I thought that movie was not disappointing at all, but maybe misunderstood. It was slow (one of its significant gripes), but honestly, not any slower than Interstellar (which critics loved, made a ton of movies in the United States, and was released just a few short months earlier). I know I am in the minority when I say that, despite its limitations and shortcomings, which I will discuss, you should give the movie a chance.
