The Hurt Locker (2009)

2009’s The Hurt Locker is one of the finest movies ever. It was utterly gripping in its year of release and is a movie that will remain relevant until the end of time. It was monumental that director Kathryn Bigelow (Point Break, Zero Dark Thirty) became the first woman to win the Academy Award for Best Director and the first woman to direct a Best Picture of the Year. It only took 80 years. Just as impressive, and a significant credit goes to Bigelow, was the breakout performance for two future Hollywood A-listers in Jeremy Renner (The TownWind River) and Anthony Mackie (The Adjustment BureauTriple 9). Ironically, both have landed themselves as Avengers characters, something I will touch on later in this review. There have been many excellent movies about the war in Iraq (Stop-Loss, The Green Zone, The Messenger, Grace Is Gone, Lions for Lambs, In the Valley of Elah, Jarhead), The Hurt Locker is second, falling just behind Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper. And it’s close. Each is a film that should receive multiple views. Each had a lead that hit his performance entirely out of the park, had incredible direction, and had a chilling score that could be listened to on a quiet night on the couch at home. It is, without a doubt, a movie that should be viewed by anyone who enjoys/appreciates war movies.

Man Down (2016)

Continuing the two themes of actors who I once didn’t like but who, in recent films, have begun to win me over (Miles Teller), as well as films about characters suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) after serving in wars in the Middle East (Thank You For Your Service) comes the critically panned Man Down, a movie that I don’t ever recall being in the theatre and didn’t know existed until a good six months after it was released. Earning a score of just 17% on Rotten Tomatoes, director Dito Montiel (A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, Fighting) delivers an emotionally disturbing, uneven film about a character traumatized by a specific incident that happened on his single tour. Man Down stars Shia LaBeouf (Lawless, Honey Boy) in what might be his finest performance to date. He stars as United States Marine Gabriel Drummer, who, after a raid and clearing of a house gone wrong in a village in Afghanistan, tells his story to Captain Peyton (Gary Oldman – Darkest HourThe Dark Knight Rises), a military superior. The critics said that this movie exploits PTSD compared to a more subtle film like Thank You For Your Service (which also has the advantage of being based on a true story, something that Man Down lacks). While I can see that, especially in the film’s final act, I disagree. War is hell. It’s one of those things that we don’t have to experience firsthand to believe. But we need to experience or be close to someone who experienced it to understand it. When we can’t, we sometimes turn to books, television, or movies, hoping they will portray a true picture. That’s what Montiel did here, even if most of his critics disagreed.

Thank You For Your Service (2017)

Miles Teller (Whiplash, Bleed for This) is an actor I increasingly like with each passing role. Since arriving on the scene in 2010 with memorable roles in Rabbit Hole and the well-made remake of Footloose, Teller has starred in the forgettable 21 and Over, Two Night Stand, and That Awkward Moment. Furthermore, his time has been consumed with the Veronica Roth Divergent / Insurgent Allegiant franchise. This series fell way short of the fantastic Hunger Games franchise and the lesser The Maze Runner series. Now, I’m not going to knock a guy for picking movies that are going to bring him a hefty paycheck, especially if there’s part of me that believes he’s doing it so that he can take less money in independent movies that can showcase his skill, evoke emotion, and that I can enjoy.

Dunkirk (2017)

Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight Rises, Inception) might be the best technical director we’ve ever seen. His precession is perfect. His attention to detail is unmatched. His brain operates so that it is always ahead of his actors and two steps ahead of his audience. We’ve seen technical masterpieces throughout his already storied career. At 47, he already has masterpieces like Following, Memento, Insomnia, Batman Begins, The Dark KnightThe Dark Knight Rises, The Prestige, Inception, and Interstellar all underneath his belt. According to Rotten Tomatoes, his “worst” movie is Interstellar, which still has a 71% fresh rating. That means his “worst” movie still had five out of every seven critics gave the movie a positive rating. However, for all of the positives associated with Nolan’s films (and there are many), he has failed to capture the often-needed emotional component with every single one.

The Wall (2017)

First things first, if you think you’re going into this seeing a John Cena movie, you will be sorely disappointed. This movie is similar to 127 HoursCast Away, I Am Legend, or All Is Lost in that it revolves almost entirely around a single character. However, some significant differences exist between this one and those just stated. There are no flashback scenes. This movie is done almost entirely in real time. And it occurs in a single location, though 127 Hours, for the most part, does as well. The Wall is similar, though, in that each of the mentioned movies experiences extreme periods of hopelessness during a part of or a majority of the movie. The Wall isn’t nearly as good as these other movies, but it was unique enough to hold your interest. Whereas 127 Hours was based on a true story, where All Is Lost is easily believable, and where I Am Legend is more of a science fiction movie for which we must suspend our belief, The Wall falls somewhere in between. I loved that it was just 81 minutes long. It didn’t need to be any longer, so why drag something out when it doesn’t have to be? And the first 20 minutes were completely engrossing. I knew little about the movie but not enough to know where it was going. But then it took a turn for the weird that took the believability aspect out of it and turned it into a game of cat and mouse that, while entertaining, was not something I’d expect out of my war movies.
