The Favourite (2018)

Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster, The Killing of the Sacred Deer) is not my favorite director. His latest film, the Olivia Colman (Murder On The Orient Express, Locke) led The Favourite is not my favorite film. His style doesn’t work for me. I like creative movies. I like unique movies. I sometimes like eccentric movies. But weird movies are hit or miss as a whole, and they are a miss for sure. Ironically, The Favourite is probably his most “normal” to date. But I found myself disinterested in it from the start. Just as ironically, the much lesser recognized Mary Queen of Scots, which was released within a week or two of this movie (and a film that I enjoyed), was widely disregarded by critics and audiences alike (63%, 44% on Rotten Tomatoes compared to 94%, 61% for The Favourite). Honestly, the only reason I’m reviewing this movie is that it is likely to get nominated for many Academy Awards, and, sadly, Best Picture will be one of those.

Disobedience (2017)

Soft, subtle, disciplined, loving, sad, purposeful, and real. Sebastián Lelio’s (A Fantastic Woman, GloriaDisobedience is all of these things and more. But as well as it does most of these movies, there are a couple of things that it just doesn’t hit on. I’ll have a spoilers section for this film later in this review. First, I will say that the film is very well made, but it doesn’t leave feeling very emotional when it is over. At its base is this life story, but Lelio fails to draw us into it soon enough, and then when he does, it feels very uneven and leaves you uncertain of each of its lead characters’ decisions. Ultimately, it becomes a movie that lacks the poignancy it set out to achieve. But it does dig deep into an important and unfortunately controversial topic of yesterday, today, and tomorrow…that of same-sex attraction and same-sex relationships. It’s so unfortunate that, as a society, we have not fully embraced same-sex relationships yet. For whatever reason, it feels like too many people treat gays or bisexuals as lesser people, similarly to how African Americans were treated in this country until the 1960s (and many would say beyond that and even into today) or how people of Middle Eastern descent were treated in the early 2000s after the September 11, 2001 attacks. To hate someone or treat some as lesser than how you’d treat someone else because of race, color, gender, religion, or sexual orientation is absolutely ridiculous to me. I’m embarrassed for people who discriminate. And, particularly right now, I am slowly choosing to distance myself from people who have such extreme views against gays. I’ve written about it in other reviews. I write about it in my poetry. This is because I am so invested in watching really good movies, such as Disobedience, about the topic of same-sex attraction or homosexuality. And I applaud the due diligence that directors pay to make these movies worthwhile experiences.

The Lobster (2016)

Yorgos Lanthimos The Lobster is one weird movie. I don’t often do well with movies I find to be weird. Some movies that have gotten high ratings with the critics are so utterly dreadful that they are virtually unwatchable. The tone is simple, the dialect is weird, and the actions are peculiar, but the overall strangeness of these movies makes the experience a chore. I know some love Wes Anderson and to each his own. The Lobster feels very similar to one of these Anderson movies, but, oddly enough, it held my interest. While I didn’t understand why a movie so strange needed to be made, I found it engaging, and it really didn’t feel like I was watching it just to say that I watched it. The Light Between Oceans (2016)

The Light Between Oceans was a terribly flawed movie that is very likely to bore many, if not most, of its moviegoers. This was evidenced by the guy sitting behind me who was sawing logs for the entire second half. But I am a sucker for broken relationship movies caused by some sort of strife, and that’s exactly what I got here. The only thing I knew about this movie was that it was about a couple living on a small island while he managed a lighthouse and that they found a baby in a boat they took as their own after she suffered a series of miscarriages. I actually wish I had gone in knowing nothing about this movie at all. All I needed to know was that it was a heavy drama, that it featured one of my favorite actors (Michael Fassbender – ShameSteve Jobs), one of the next great actresses of our time who absolutely arrived on the scene with two massive performances in 2015 (Alicia Vikander – Ex MachinaThe Other Danish Girl), and the director of one of my favorite movies of all-time (Derek Cianfrance – Blue ValentineThe Place Beyond the Pines). That enough would have gotten me in the theater. And that is enough for me to give this a positive review despite a story that had much promise but had some uneven turns and ultimately led to characters making decisions that didn’t make a whole lot of sense. What I loved most about this movie (which will be the focus of this review) is how two different people can face the same ethical dilemma and how the decision can eat one person up so much that they almost can’t live with themselves. In contrast, the other person can continue living their life peacefully as if the decision they had to make was whether to have sausage or pepperoni on their pizza the night before.

The Bourne Legacy (2012)

the bourne legacy movie posterFans of the Jason Bourne Trilogy (The Bourne Identity, The Bourne SupremacyThe Bourne Ultimatum) will, in all likelihood, enjoy The Matt Damon-less The Bourne Legacy. However, I’m wondering how many new fans this movie will attract. Director Tony Gilroy (Michael Clayton, Duplicity) repeatedly references Jason Bourne in this movie. Those looking to enter the franchise and think that this is the right time because Jeremy Renner (The Town, The Hurt Locker) is cast in the lead role instead of Damon will be disappointed if they don’t do their homework ahead of time. I would have been very frustrated watching this movie without seeing the other three first. I would have wanted to understand better what was going on. In The Bourne Legacy, Gilroy doesn’t seem interested in recapping a story that has already been told. You are out of luck if you have not seen a previous Bourne movie or need to research. Gilroy feels it’s not his job to keep you informed. For those wishing to see this movie without seeing any of the predecessors or if it has been a while since you’ve seen The Bourne Ultimatum, I suggest you visit this site first. The Bourne Legacy Primer: Five Things to Know Before Seeing the Franchise’s Latest Flick – E! Online. Even if you saw The Bourne Ultimatum the night before seeing this movie, I’d recommend checking out this link. It won’t hurt to do so.
